Workshops Summerschool Den Haag 2010

SHE WAS BLACK
The highly acclaimed piece ‘She was Black’ from 1995 is about mystical doors and openings to another world, about the interior and the urban. Mats Ek wanted to reconnect with the lyrical concept after making modern interpretations of classical ballets such as Carmen and Swanlake, now without the heavy narrative. The interaction between these two approaches of dance (lyrical and narrative) is of upmost importance to Ek. His language sheds light on the darkness inside us all.

Coppelia mini workshop
for the intermediate (amateur)student Click...
Coppelia is a timeless ballet about the story of a young couple in love and their battle between idealism and realism. The choreography was made by Saint-Léon and the music composed by Delibes. For both it became their most famous work and Delibes was publicly admired by Tchaikovsky.
This summer young vocational students will learn and dance several parts from this charming ballet first performed in 1870. Mirella Simoncini will be working with a small group, coaching them into several variation from Coppelia with personal attention for technique, pleasure and mental development.
Originally based on a macabre tale by E. T. A. Hoffmann ‘Der Sandmann’ (The Sandman), it was decided to stay away from the Gothic aspects and make Coppelia into a romantic comedy. For the audience Coppelia was a great relief from the heavy, more sad ballets at that time.
Simoncini has been teaching classical repertoire (a.o. Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire and Giselle) for several years, working with young professionals and students attending the (inter)national vocational dance schools.
Regarding strength and physical condition of young(er) students, each choreography will be adjusted to a suitable level. Each day is integerated with a balletclass and short pointe class with preliminary (or repertoire focused)

Find out how to dance- and tell a story that was performed almost 150 years ago.
Coppelia is one of the most enjoyable and charming classical ballets first performed in May 1870. Originally based on a macabre tale by E. T. A. Hoffmann ‘Der Sandmann’ (The Sandman), it was decided to stay away from the Gothic aspects and make the Ballet into a romantic comedy. The music by Leo Delibes is often seen as a key reason for the popularity and is noted as a work that moved ballet music forward in a major step.
In this mini workshop you will dance several parts from Coppelia after the original choreography (by Saint-Leon and Petipa). You will feel the connection between musicality and the steps. And discover how to dance- and tell a story that was originaly performed 150 years ago by a young girl named Guiseppina Bozacchi.

At age 15 Guiseppina Bozacchi was given the leading role in Coppelia (Swanilda). She was discovered while searching the schools in France to replace the Russian Adèle Grantzow who could not dance Coppelia because she was ill. The young girl danced the part with tremendous success but her career would be one of the shortest of record. Two months after the premierre War broke out and there were no more performances. Sadly Giuseppina died of cholera on her 17th birthday but she is still remembered today because of her perfomance in Coppelia.
Simoncini has been teaching classical repertoire for several years, working with young professionals and students attending the (inter)national vocational dance schools. This year she also worked with children in a Swan Lake workshop for the Education Department Dr Anton Philipszaal/Lucent Danstheater. Repertoire workshops previousely at Summerschool Den Haag include: Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire and Giselle.
The Coppelia repertoire in this workshop will be made suitable especially for the intermediate and advanced student.
(young professionals are welcome to join the repertoire intensive on 17/19/21 aug.).
